Purpose The Jetmaster Foam Monitor is used for major fires requiring foam, where its use is more appropriate than a hand-held branch. An example would be at a large storage tank fire where there would be considerable danger to personnel.
Description The foam monitor is designed to ensure maximum stability on all terrain and has independently adjustable legs to allow the monitor’s angle to be adjusted prior to operation. The angle of the ground plate at the base of the unit can also be varied. The foam monitor has two water inlets and a pick up tube inlet, as shown below. The horizontal hose layout to each side of the cannon provides additional stability. The low-expansion foam cannon is used with standard Niagara foam concentrate, and the self-educting facility (with automatic proportioning) allows the unit to operate unattended once it is set up with adequate foam supplies. It works in a similar way to the FB10 branch, as described in the Fire Service Manual, Volume 1.
Hazards of Use· Use appropriate manual handling techniques when removing the monitor from the OSU, transporting it to or from the site of the incident or when stowing it away after use. Two people should be used to manhandle the monitor. · Ensure that the monitor is firmly grounded before use, securing the base plate with ground spikes or by lashing/anchoring it to a fixed structure.
Operational UseOperate the monitor as follows: 1. The Jetmaster requires a pressure of 10.5 bars and a flow of approx. 1600 litres per minute (l/min). The pressure gauge on the Jetmaster enables the pressure at the branch to be set accurately. However, these requirements mean that each Jetmaster must be supplied with water via 70mm hose from one major pump, which will then not be able to supply any other branches. 2. The foam concentrate can be induced at the branch or at the pump. It can also be pressure fed to the branch using 45mm ‘blue’ hose from the Operational Support Unit. 3. The Jetmaster needs approx. 45 l/min of foam concentrate (with 3% foam). When induced at the branch, the Jetmaster itself maintains the correct ratio. When induced at the pump it can be metered into the system by the ’round the pump foam proportioner’ on the WrL. When pressure-fed, the concentrate is automatically regulated by a ‘Maric’ in-line flow control valve in the blue hoseline (usually at branch or pump end). 4. If desired, the Jetmaster can be used as a plain water monitor by removing the ‘foam improver’ barrel.
..For Ground Monitor procedures refer to Fire Service Training Manual Sect 4.5 Drill P10 and Equipment Note EQ054 “Portable Ground Monitors”. Immediately after use, withdraw the foam pick-up tube from the concentrate to avoid wastage due to siphoning. After use, flush the monitor and hoses thoroughly with clean water.
Standard Testing The Jetmaster must be inspected and tested as described in the Standard Tests Manual Part 3, E44 “Ground Monitors” at the following frequencies: · Visual inspection on acceptance, after use and 6 monthly at the Station Manager’s discretion. · Functional test 6 monthly after the inspection. Record all observations in the appropriate test record sheet in the Standard Test Register. Use the equipment’s serial number or other ID to reference it in the test record.
Cleaning and Maintenance Wear PPE gloves and eye protection when cleaning the equipment, for protection from sharp edges and contamination. After use, thoroughly wash the monitor and pick-up tube inside and out to remove all foam and concentrate. Check that all orifices are clear. Brush dirt off the base plate as necessary.
